Write for rights

As human beings we are protected by law, we are entitled to the Human Rights set out in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Article 5: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. However Moses Akatugba has experienced torture and now faces the death penalty for a crime he allegedly committed when he was 15 years old.

Article 9: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. However Lui Ping has been sentenced to a 10 year prison sentence for taking part in a peaceful protest.

Due it these and many other Human Rights abuses a small group of motivated Mullion students took part in an Amnesty International Campaign; Write for Rights. They gave up their free time to write to these individuals to let them know they’re not alone and that they were campaigning for their rights here in the UK.

I was given the great privilege of reading their messages before they were posted and was genuinely moved by the kind, inspiring words offered by our students. Their letters will make a huge difference to these individuals and offer a little hope during the festive season.

Well done and thank you, Tegan Martyn (9Y), Sarah Bell (10R), Izzy Collinson (10G), Rosie Tregonning (11B), Jos Edwards-Moore, Josh Wilson-Hone (11G), Adelaide Swanepoel (11R) and Phoebe Tricker (11Y)
