U16 Basketball Team second in county

This week saw the county finals of the basketball and we were proud  that we had qualified.  The team has worked hard over the years to develop into an elite squad of players under the tutelage of Mr Allen and it is great to see the recognition in their final year.  On Wednesday the team met early to travel to Truro School for a triangular competition against Budehaven and Bodmin schools to decide who would go onto to the regional competition.

A long day started very positively with a convincing win over Bude 28-14.  The match was almost won from the start with Ben Coad winning the tip off and the team quickly got into their stride with Adam Christophers sinking basket after basket.  Defense was solid as well and good fitness allowed them to get back quickly to set up their zone.  The whole team showed discipline and teamwork during the game which allowed them to play in different positions with all players contributing well.

The second and final game to determine who would be county champions got off to a poor start with Mullion quickly finding themselves 8-0 down.  The team showed resilience but were frustrated often under the basket by a Bude defence who had studied our previous game and worked hard to block Adam out from under the basket.  The physicality of the game escalated and fouls were conceded by both teams but it was Mullion who were first to have a player foul out.  Bude capitalised and further extended their lead and kept the Mullion players out forcing them to shoot from distance.  As the game progressed frustration set in and the game was sadly lost.

I was very proud that the team came second in the county.  It is a good reward for the hours spent training.  Thank you to the players for a lovely day of competition and to Mr Allen for his commitment to training the teams over the year.
