U.16 Basketball tournament– Dec 2015

The U.16 basketball squad travelled to Penryn quietly confident based upon their previous competitions. Eight teams entered this year’s competition with Penryn and Richard Lander both having an ‘A’ and a ‘B’ team. We were in a group with Penair, Richard Lander ‘A’ and Penryn ‘B’ and unfortunately got off to a slow start against a strong Penair side and lost 10-0 having missed a number of good opportunities.  Our second game was against Richard Lander ‘A’ who contained a dominant County player and who were always a competitive side. By now we had woken up and gave our best team performance in restricting them to few chances and walked off with an excellent 6 – 2 win. Our last group game was against Penryn ‘B’, the weakest team in our group and won quite comfortably, although a sloppy last few minutes allowed them to threaten our superiority and gave the score a much closer feel at 8-7. The outcome of this was that Penair, Richard Lander ‘A’ (who beat Penair) and ourselves all finished level  on 4 points. Unfortunately only 2 teams went through to the ‘finals group’ and points difference decided, due to our poor opening game, that we were third!!

This meant that we were in the group playing for 5th-8th with Pool, Falmouth and Penryn ’B’. We started well against a quite physical Pool side but won comfortably 8-0 and then had an exciting game against Falmouth where we raced into a good lead only for them to pull us back in the last minutes to gain a 6-6 draw. Our final game drew us against Penryn ‘B’ that we had met previously in our group, but this time shots went in and we won comfortably 12-0.

The outcome of all this was having only lost one game out of six we officially finished  the tournament 5th although the only side to beat us were the eventual winners, Penair.

The squad was made up of Jamieson Boll, and Taro Bean from Year 10 and Matt Hall, Aaron Goddard, Ben Fletcher, Marcus Skewes, Harry Thirlaway-Price and Tyler Briggs from Year 11. The boys all competed with enthusiasm, energy and skill and were a credit to Mullion School
