Sports Stars meet Mullion Students

Mullion school was lucky enough to receive visits from two international sports stars.  On Thursday 27 November Kate Grey, Paralympic swimmer and BBC correspondent, and on Friday 28 November Thinus Delport, South African rugby international and Sky Sports pundit, worked with pupils of the school thanks to our membership of the Youth Sport Trust.

Kate came for her second visit to work with one of our GCSE PE groups, a group of Year 7 Leaders and the Year 10 Study Plus group.  The visit is part of the Sky Sports Living for Sport programme run by the YST which aims to use sport and athlete mentors to encourage students to develop in cross curricular areas.  The Year 7s were told about how Kate had overcome barriers and learnt from her sports career to embrace her disability and not let it hold her back.  They will be working to develop their own confidence, skills and plans to lead a sports session for one of our primary schools’ KS1 classes after Christmas.

On Thursday 27 November, Paralympian, Kate Grey inspired a group of year 10 pupils, who have been improving their attainment in English and Maths through a subject called ‘Study Plus’. The pupils used the visit to help them develop journalistic skills and improve the quality of their writing. Kate allowed the pupils to conduct group interviews with her, asking a range of questions in their role as sports journalists. Kate Grey then used her experience as a Sky and BBC commentator to tutor and challenge the pupils, leading a thoroughly entertaining and engaging lesson. The pupils progressed wonderfully well and showed their gratitude at the end of the session.
