On Thursday three rugby teams made the hot, winding journey to Redruth School. Some players making their debuts for the school and some even playing their first game of contact rugby. Coming off the back of losses away to Penryn last week the sides were keen to make progress and progress they made.
The Y11 1st XV, with last minute call ups for Javier and Arthur from Y10, finished their match in jubilant mood after a hard fought victory. The squad performed well as a team and finished off some wonderful moves to score five tries under the proud eyes of Mrs Mathias, whom described their play as fantastic. Insightful runs were made by Matt which broke through the Redruth defence on a couple occasions to score the final try.
The youngsters in Y7 battled away though out the match, developing better skills going into contact and in supporting each other’s runs. Tom made some very good strong runs into opposition territory supported by some committed tackling and mauling from Angus, Rudy and Kalian. Joseph and Jago showed their agility and tenacity running at speed and tackling back. However the side could not break down the strong Redruth defence and were beaten. I am really proud of the way they worked together and followed advice, I am sure they will reverse this result in their next match against Falmouth.
The Y8 team also struggled to get points on the board but they did make the effort to get players to the rucks and mauls quicker which was highlighted last week and we look forward to seeing them improve again next week. Training for these three teams is Tuesday after school and Y9 and Y10 Tuesday lunchtimes.
