Kid’s Lit Quiz Final 2013

Mullion School students attend UK Literature Quiz Final at Kings College School, London.

Four students from Mullion School went forward to a 16 team final held at The Great Hall, Kings College School,Wimbledon on the 6th December  following  their success in the Sout West regional heat at Truro College the week before.

Rosie Dorrell, Hannah Griffiths and Ruari McDonald of Year 8, along with Grace Sherratt from Year 7, again showed off their extensive knowledge of children’s literature through a series of rounds in the heats.  This time they were competing against the current and prevous champions not to mention some of the top 5 schools in the country.

It was a wonderful trip to an amazing old traditional school.  The Great Hall reminded our pupils of Hogworts plus the vast choice of food on offer in the restaurant truly impressed them.  We were made very welcome with the added bonus of meeting sixteen popular authors.  Each author sponsored a team, Margaret Bateson-Hill being ours.  Gillian Cross and the Mayor of Merton were the special guests.

Staff and students had only a few days to arrange the trip to London and prepare themselves for the quickfire, on the buzzer format.  We were very grateful to Mr Sandford’s relatives who offered us accommodation with only 4 days notice.  Mr Sawden very kindly did all the driving, finding parking areas in the middle of London with a 17seater minibus is no mean feat.

A valiant effort saw them finish 12th out of the 16 finalists from all four corners of the UK.

Marion Bradley, Mullion School’s Librarian, who put the teams forward for the quiz said, “We are so proud of our students. Not only did one of the teams win the South West heat but our other team of four came 6th out of the 43 that entered.” She went on to say, “The four we took to London were a credit to Mullion School and Cornwall!”

Grace Sherratt, and the other Year 7s who took part in the heats, will still be eligible for next years competition so watch this space for more success.
