Hockey Festival

Mullion School’s year 8 hockey team travelled to Truro to play a county hockey tournament on the 27th January. There were 5 teams in our pool with each game lasting 12 minutes one way. Mullion’s first game was against the strong Truro High team which proved to be a difficult start to the tournament losing 7-0. The girls defended hard but were unable to prevent the unstoppable strikes hitting the backboard of their goal. The next game they played was much more evenly matched against Pool Academy with the end result being 1-1. This was due to the determination, effort and enthusiasm the year 8 students brought the pitch.

The goal came from a short corner that was pushed out the top of the D and slipped to the left for a Mullion player to put away into the back of the net. Unfortunately, with minutes left of the game Pool managed to push the ball over the goal line making it 1-1. Mullion kept their spirits high as we lead into the next game against Humphrey Davy School who were so far unbeaten in the competition but were still to face Truro High school.

With Humphrey Davy having a key player, Mullion worked hard to prevent her getting the ball as much as possible. Mullion had chances as they pushed forwards but were unable to capitalise on these chances and put the ball in the back of the net. Humphrey Davy also had opportunities to score but the Mullion defence and goalkeeper denied them of all their chances finishing the game on a 0-0 draw. In the final game Mullion took on Newquay Tretherras.

This game had a similar story to the Truro high match with Mullion losing 6-0, however, as always Mullion kept their heads up and put the opposition under pressure with the game not being as one sided as the score suggests. Mullion still had the opportunity to get the ball into the opposition’s D and it was Newquay’s dangerous players on the break that were able to score when they overloaded into the D. Truro High and Humphrey Davy progressed to the next round of the tournament.

Thank you to all the girls for playing and to Hannah Bowman for umpiring the matches whilst on work experience back at the school.
