GCSE Resistant Materials students visit Joinery

The Wednesday before half term saw the  GCSE Resistant Materials students visit David Gilbert Joinery in Cury.

The students had a busy morning, starting with a tour of the joinery workshop. David showed the students how his stock timber came into the workshop, how it was cut down to size, then planed and shaped. The joinery has a variety of machines, some the students were familiar with, but the most impressive probably being the four sided planer. Questions were fired at David regarding all aspects of his business, from his role as a designer and manufacturer to his duties of care to staff.

After the tour students had time to refresh with a drink and a biscuit then it was straight back to work sketching the layout of the workshop noting how health and safety was an important feature for the positioning of the machines. They also noted the health and safety features of the workshop and compared them to those in place at school.

Next it was straight into a practical session. David had pre arranged for the students to use the tools and some machines to manufacture a traditional mortise and tenon joint. David showed the students the correct way of marking out their material and then demonstrated how to use the mortising machine. The students were already competent with the band saw so it was down to work. After helping each other to mark out students worked on either the band saw of the mortising machine, heads were down and dust was flying! The students were well behaved through out and all produced high quality wood joints to take home and show off.
