Extreme Reading Competition 2014

Following the popularity of the ‘Extreme Reading  Competition’ last year, the English Department decided to run it again in 2014.

The rules of the competition were simple: Read a book. Do so in an ‘extreme’ or creative situation. (Although no risks should be taken) Take a picture. Ensure it is appropriate. Pass it on to Mr Fergus.

The results were spectacular, creative and brilliant. The main hall of the school again carried the ‘Hall of Fame,’ with entrants from staff and pupils alike; all trying to invent new, inventive and sometimes ridiculous situations in which to be snapped.

Entrants from the staff included a fantastically witty, airbrushed picture of Mr. Sandford in the guise of Bobby Charlton, a ski jumping picture of Mrs. Carkeet, a sprinting action shot from Mr. Roberts, scaffold climbing and reading from Mrs Brown and even a dentist chair reading from Mrs King!

Pupil entries were varied and fantastic! They included:

Eye testing and reading, bridge hanging, rock climbing, water sports reading; baking, golfing and rock jumping.

Mr Fergus announced the winners and highly commended entrants in a special assembly for the entrants, taking advice and opinions from many other staff before making the final decisions. The top three were:

3rd– Rosie Dorrell, for her trio of pictures with a theme of activities linked with texts. The final picture being ironic- in a farm setting with cows, reading a vegetarian cookbook.

2nd– Grace Sharratt, for her opthalmology snap of her having her eyes tested.

1st– Javier Gomez, for his inspiring picture, captured whilst paddling a kayak with an incredible high rise backdrop.

Due to such a wonderful response, it seems likely that this competition will make a return in the future. Well done Javier and all who took part in such a great spirit of fun.
