Extreme Reading Competition 2013

As a part of the opening celebration for the new   Mullion School Library, the English Department decided to run an ‘Extreme Reading Competition.’ The response was overwhelming. It was wonderful to see so many taking part.

The rules of the competition were simple: Read a book. Do it in an ‘extreme’ situation. Take a picture. Ensure it is appropriate. Pass it into Mr Fergus.

The results were startling, engaging and creative. The main hall of the school carried the ‘Hall of Fame,’ with entrants from staff and pupils alike; all trying to invent new, inventive and sometimes ridiculous situations in which to be snapped.

Entrants from the staff included mathematical reading from Mr Roberts in a chicken coup, skateboarding from Mrs Gomez, kayaking in heavy seas whilst reading from Mr Swinburne and a tremendous royal balcony picture from Mr Sandford (which we suspect may have involved subtle cheating methods, although it got a great response.)

The pupils ideas were tremendous; we had reading animals, water sport reading, climbing whilst reading, hanging upside down reading, sporty reading, archery reading, themed reading and many more. The challenge was for somebody to decide on which one should be the outright winner. Finalists were announced and each given a chocolate prize. They were:

Jowan Dorrell, Leia Barrett- Grainger and Jess Putt, Rosie Dorrell, Iola Lawton, Robin Whitehouse, Sam Merridew, Owen Williams, Alice Bowman, George McMinn.

Mr Fergus announced the winner in assembly, following advice from Mr Rainbow and Mrs Hall. The winner was Jim Lee 8R, for his artistic and creative interpretation of the brief.

Due to such a wonderful response, it seems likely that this competition will make a return in the future. Well done Jim and all who took part in such a great spirit of fun.
