Events at Mullion School

Easter Hootenanny at Mullion School

Mullion School created its own brand of live music event on Friday 15th March with 11 different musical acts performing in the transformed school hall. The event may have borrowed its title from Scotland’s new year celebrations and taken a big slice of Jools Holland’s format, but this was all new Mullion talent.

Mullion School’s Head of Music, Georgina Davies, has the good fortune to work with a committed peripatetic music team always prepared to drive things forward. One of these, Mark Burgoyne, was determined to give support for all the young musicians desperate to be in a band. “Everyone wants to be in a band, but they don’t know how to go about it.”

The school created a concept called Band Factory where there is a rolling programme of support for groups. Performing Arts Technician, Martin Wren, set up a practise room specifically for bands. The music area is a buzz of activity every lunchtime and a delighted audience enjoyed the results of the efforts that had gone in.

The list of bands included, The Marys, Tegen and Kim, The Percussion Ensemble led by Ross Hamilton, Rebekka Sharp and the Pound Notes, The Major Blues Band, The Zappa Project and the Funk Band. Solo performances came from Tom Briggs, Madi Madison, Eva Bird and Joe Welch who, in addition to his Tim Minchinesque singing slot, compered the whole evening with a blend of wit and whacky. The audience were left impressed and keen for another event soon.
