DoE Practice Expeditions – if it ain’t raining, it ain’t training!

Over the past two weekends school staff have run¬†practice expeditions¬†for 86 Year 9&10 pupils’ Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award. Despite the poor forecasts, the weather was kind to us all. The pupils worked in teams of 5 to 7 to complete a two-day expedition around the Mullion area in order to demonstrate skills in navigation, cooking, campcraft but also the invaluable soft skills of teamwork, resilience, motivation, all of which are so important in developing good character. The pupils experience the feeling of self reliance as staff leave them to find their way around the lanes and cliff paths solo before they return for lectures in the evening which take them up to an early night. Some pupils confidently trek around whilst others struggle but it is how they all react to this in the team is vital to success.

The staff hope that the pupils will take away happy memories as well as learnt valuable skills which they will use in the summer assessed expeditions in west Cornwall. Mr Loder was delighted to have so many pupils take up the challenge and hope that many more continue to sign up and even go on to Silver award training. Thank you to Miss Bunyan, Mrs Mathias, Mr Trudgeon, Mrs Hatton, Miss Moreton, Mrs Tatham and Mrs Batley for their support and Mr Davey and Mr Gilbert for their rescue missions! Good luck to the pupils for their assessed expeditions.
