Events at Mullion School

Careerscope 2013

On Thursday 24th January, Mullion school held its biennial careers event. The event held at the school is designed to provide a wonderful opportunity for pupils, parents and those thinking of a career change, to talk to various colleges, universities, training providers and employers.

The event attracted over 250 visitors, who were able to tour the many stands on show and receive up to date advice on college and university courses, apprenticeships and general careers advice.

During the afternoon pupils were entertained by music performances from Helston Jazz Orchestra, Truro College’s music department and Cornwall College DBS. There were over 50 individual stands at the event including representatives from; Cornwall College, Truro College, Duchy College, The Armed Forces, Head & Head Veterinary Clinic, Cornwall Combined Training, University College Falmouth, National Trust, Sainsburys, Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, Ultra Work Based Learning and Pendennis Shipyard.

Many of the stands were interactive, with pupils being able to try their hand at building a wall, cake decorating, using a giant wood turning lathe, become a CSI and interpret blood splatter, handle snakes and insects and get their hair and nails done.

The event was a great success with all the exhibitors commenting on how well organised the event was and in particular how helpful and polite the pupil volunteers were. Some of the comments from exhibitors:

Was your trip to Careerscope 2013 worthwhile? ‘Very much so and I believe students gained an insight into the creative industry as well as progression option’. Lisa Mortensen of Cornwall College Arts & Media.

What did you particularly enjoy today? ‘The keen, enquiring minds!’ Penwith College Games Development.

How did you find the general organisation? ‘VVV impressed from initially meeting students on the door to regular contact with staff, very well organised. Truro & Penwith College Higher Education.

Special thanks must go to the prefect team; their hard work throughout the day and evening meant the event was a great success.
