Headlines:

The start to 2010 and the new decade will certainly live in everyone’s memory for some time.  The staff returned to school on Monday 4 January and we will all remember shivering in the hall, as we went through various training issues.  The heating was on, but after the Christmas holiday, the school was taking a long time to warm up.  The pupils returned on Tuesday 5 January, but by the end of the day the snow came in and we had to shut the following day.

On Thursday we decided to try to re-open and about 150 pupils and two thirds of the staff managed to get into school, but then the snow returned and we suddenly had to call the buses back in to try to get everyone home.  Thanks to everyone who helped with their 4 by 4’s.

By Monday 11 January, it had not snowed for a while and we all hoped that we could re-open as normal.  But this proved to be the worst day of all.  Overnight ice had turned the roads and footpaths into skating rinks.  The Police closed the St Keverne - Helston road and turned people back at Bochym on the Mullion - Helston road.  Phone calls to our bus companies at 0630 suggested that no one would travel safely on the Lizard Peninsula and drivers reported taking 1 ¼ hours to cover the 9 miles from Helston to Mullion.

In these situations we try to get information about what Mullion School will do, as soon as is possible, on to Radio Cornwall and we thank you all for your patience and understanding in these difficult times.  Let’s hope that is an end to it!

Following this unusual start, the rest of the term has developed into the usual round of busy activity.  Our Year 11 pupils have also had to start making serious plans about their future and what they do next, once they have left Mullion School.  They have been involved in writing applications to the nearby colleges and researching information about the sort of course that they might like to study.  Truro College are holding another Open Day on Saturday 13 March, from 1000 - 1300 and an Open Evening on Thursday 13 May, from 1700 - 2000 and Cornwall College have an Open Day on Saturday 6 March, from 1000 -1200.

Year 11 have also been taking their GCSE Mock Exams, in the Hall, during these last two weeks and we hope to get information about their results back to you, as parents, as soon as possible.  The Year 11 Parents’ Evening is Wednesday 10 March, from 1600 - 1845.

Other events have included the Inter-House Humanities Quiz, the English Department running an Inter-House Public Speaking competition with the help of the local Rotary Club, the DT Food department running a Young Rotary Chef of the Year competition, pupils taking part in the local inter school swimming gala at the Carn Brae pool, a Year 11 GCSE Art trip to Tate St Ives in preparation for their GCSE Art exam, our Wind Band performing at Mullion Methodist Church, the Miracle Theatre Group performing their excellent production of The Revenge of  Rumplestiltskin, as part of our Carn to Cove production scheme, and final preparations for our 2010 Ski Trip to Radstadt, in Austria, which takes place over half term, from Friday 12 February to Saturday 20 February.

Our next big production will be the Dance Show on 24 -25 March.  Ms Randall has been busy rehearsing for this and we send our best wishes to everyone involved in this event.

Staffing:

We welcome George Popperwell who has replaced Mr Burch in the Maths department.  Mr Allen is the acting Head of Department.

Congratulations:

Congratulations to 9Y who initiated a campaign to collect money for Shelterbox in aid of the victims of the Haiti Earth Quake to just over a week and with everyone’s help they raised over £1200.00 - a fantastic effort.
